Midpoint for Megara: What's in Store?

We've officially broken 55,000 words on the rough draft of The Hunter's Daughter! That means we're about 62% of the way to editing. It's been a crazy holiday season, but I am glad to announce that we are back on track to finishing book 1 of the Megara Thorne, Vampire Hunter series.

By now, I've nearly written four books. That's four beginnings, four middles, and four ends. I think the middle is a very underrated part of the novel craft. Beginnings are exciting, and endings are action packed, but the middle, for me, is the part that holds the most meat. This is where we learn about the true meaning of the story, and where we get a hint at the resolution of the problem. Will the MC be able to shake off the torment of the past, or will they crumble under the pressure? It's all very dramatic on paper, but when done well, it's subtle and gives the reader an idea of the character's arc.

So by now, you're probably wondering what Megara's arc is... Well, I'll tell you.

Just kidding. That would be too easy - you'll have to wait for the book to come out.

But what I will say is that Megara is a character that surprised me in many ways. She's tough as nails, but even prickly pears like her have soft spots. As the book unfolds, we learn more and more about where she's willing to compromise her rigid moral code for the greater good, and when all is said and done, the big question remains: did she make the right choices, or did she make grievous mistakes?

I'm curious... other writers - is it the same for you? Other readers - what makes a satisfying middle? Or conversely, when do you find yourself entrenched in the middle muck of a novel that just doesn't quite keep you in suspense?

Thanks for reading. For updates on The Hunter's Daughter and first priority for its release date, subscribe to my email list. As always...

Stay Sassy,
